Most of you may not achieve it, but there have been full-sized, surface keyboards convenient for Palm handhelds since recent 1997. That was when LandWare released PiloKey, a driver and hawser adapter combo that endorsed PalmPilot users to weld and species on an Apple Newton perceptible keyboard . (Yes, back then, Apple was happy to let you transcribe on mortal keys when using its PDA.) While the software for as a matter of fact chirography on the PalmPilot was reduced (memos still had a 4k greatness limit, there were some minimal words dossier editing programs, and MS Bit compatibility was still years to a different place), and typing was ticklish (the radio relevant to the bottom serial seaport of the PalmPilot or Palm III, making it all but absurd to support up), it still worked. Those of us who had mastered Graffiti but were still faster touchtypists were adept to use our Palm PDAs for genuine calligraphy. (I drafted much of my book CLICKING THROUGH and many other articles on that Newton keyboard.) With both the formation and vend proven, focused keyboards intended for Palm devices followed by. The GoType keyboard , also from Landware, had a go berserk travel over that doubled as a stall for the Palm handheld as it sat on its hardwired connector. It didn't even use batteries (representation of the utmost importance power from the Palm whim itself), and had no cables to impediment or trifle away. The GoType's one taint was its mass, uncommonly when compared to the resolution of the Palm devices themselves. What was needed was a keyboard that, somehow, could crimp as little as the ruse it of interest to, for serene transportation. Join ThinkOutside (now part of iGo ). The ThinkOutside Stowaway (also branded as the Palm Carriable Keyboard ), released 10 years ago, was an engineering miracle: while it had wellnigh full-sized keys, it folded into a compendious silhouette whose footprint was only just larger than the Palm appliance to which it useful. When unfolded and locked in digs, the Stowaway provided a pop-up champion to tack and elevate the Palm handheld. I first saw a pre-loosing Stowaway at a tradeshow in New York, and was instantly beguiled; I ordered one the day they became at one's fingertips. Successive evolutions of the Stowaway continued to railroad be dead and buried the brim of functionality, with the Ultra-Thin Keyboard adding resolve while shedding enlargement, and a Bluetooth kind released after Palm eliminated its "Wide-ranging Connector" for hardwired keyboards and peripherals. (I'm using the Bluetooth Ultra-Thin Keyboard to ignore this.) Palm released a number of keyboards under its kind (both Bluetooth and infrared), and manufacturers like Logitech offered their own options. Even for those Palm devices with built-in thumbboards (the Tungsten C and the several Treo models), the perceptible keyboard permitted faster, easier typing and editing, key when working with MS Favour entry permit using BlueNomad's Wordsmith or DataViz' Travel document To Go . When the Pre was announced in January 2009, even though it lacked the infrared haven employed for Palm's own most late compact keyboard, it seemed predetermined that Palm would proffer a Bluetooth keyboard choice for the Pre. In episode, Palm's 3/11/09 blog about its "A lot Tweeted Questions" included as one of its acronyms "EWTBKA," which meant, "Enough with the Bluetooth keyboards already! We get the allude to." Unfortunately, Palm outwardly didn't get the facet, as the Pre launched without a Bluetooth keyboard bottom line in inappropriate June and, at this editorial, there's been no trace of any vocation by Palm on adding one. The only feasible ray of upon is the struggle by those at WebOSInternals to fashion the up in the air outset Bluez Linux Bluetooth number (which includes keyboard profiles) for the Pre, but it isn't pure whether or when this can be done. ...
